In the early 1500s, Mary appeared to a Mexican peasant named Juan Diego four separate times. Mary asked Juan Diego to build a church where she appeared to him, but no one would believe him—at first. When the archbishop demanded proof of Juan’s visions, Mary filled Juan Diego’s tilma (cloak) with roses; later when he opened his cloak, the roses fell to the floor and a beautiful image of the Virgin Mary appeared on the cloth.
